All About Rhinoplasty
December 6th, 2005 by admin | Filed under Uncategorized. What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is the medical term used for plastic surgery of the nose. This surgery is to change the structure of the nose by adding or removing bone or cartilage. It is also done by grafting tissue from another part of the body or using synthetic material to make alterations in the shape of the nose.Though most cases of rhinoplasty arise due to cosmetic reasons, an injury or abnormal structure of the nose causing breathing problems could also be the reason. A large or malformed nose can easily be corrected with rhinoplasty.
Minor changes can only be made depending on the bone structure and anatomy of the nose. How much the minor change would affect the final look largely depends on the surgeon’s capability and skill, hence the most important decision is that to choose a qualified and experienced surgeon. The tight ness of the skin also plays an important role along with the bone structure as people with thin skin would see more dramatic results than people with thick or harder skin as it would not allow the bone structure to be very prominent.
About the surgery
The surgery can be of two kinds , external or internal , depending on how much of a change is to be made through the surgery.
The external nose is comprised of skin, bone and cartilage. The skin between the nostrils is called collumella.
Under Internal rhinoplasty all incisions are made inside the nasal cavity.
Under external rhinoplasty incisions are made across the base of the collumella. The external incision makes the nasal structure more visible and becomes easier to operate on the bone and cartilage to reshape the nose, especially if it is a complicated surgery. The remaining skin is then replaced over the new framework. If it is required to add bone, cartilage or skin to the nose it can be taken from the persons body itself or synthetic materials can be used.
Simple surgeries can be done under local anesthesia and do not require hospital stay, whereas complicated ones are performed under general anesthesia.
After the surgery
•After the operation splint can be used and the nose and the nose is stuffed with dressing to keep the structure intact.
•The patients may experience swelling and pain requiring pain relievers and sedatives.
•Patients also experience headache and swelling near the eyes.
