A 30 Day Crusade Against Smoking - Day 2 - Enlist Peter Falk’s Methods
June 15th, 2007 by admin | Filed under Uncategorized.Bans on public smoking are spreading throughout the world. That suits Eric who is a lifelong non-smoker, nay, ANTI-smoker. For 30 days he will change the world and the habits of current smokers.
Day 2:
It was time for breakfast. Already the house smelt of stale smoke – not surprising after 40 years of chain puffing and coughing. I told her that I am a passive smoker and that several hundred people die each year through inhaling other’s used smoke. She retorted that you have to die of something and that even if I did die, her memory of me would live on.
I had to do something. It was either her or me – and she was in the ascendancy. But no more. I had already tried burning the cigarette packets. The fire brigade, when they came, were very supportive but suggested that such action would not be the one they advised.
Luckily I had watched an episode of Colombo the other night where a murderess put a crystal of cyanide in the tip of a cigarette. I decided to give it a go – except, all I could find was a small chunk of a dishwasher tablet. I went ahead fearfully – would she be put off by the smell and taste (or worse, could this be a “Columbo” all over again) or would she find new reasons to stick with the habit?
I watched from a safe distance as she took her first puff. I had read childhood stories of bleaches and detergents exploding on contact with heat, although our dishwasher had never been affected. She quickly became engulfed in a huge smoky cloud – but this was the normal mess of carcinogenic chemicals. She continued.
I vowed to battle on.
