Great Smiles Are Cheaper Than You Think
February 22nd, 2008 by admin | Filed under Uncategorized. If your teeth have seen better days, you probably should be considering teeth bleaching and porcelain veneers as a way to give them new life. But how do you know which is best for you? Following are a few key things you should consider before you make your decision.
Porcelain veneers will require your tooth to be reduced by about .5mm and are not considered to be reversible. Unless you are overly anxious or have sensitivity to dental procedures, you probably will not need to be under an anesthetic. If you choose to be, it will be just a local anesthetic.
It will take about a week for the laboratory to make your new porcelain veneers to exactly fit your teeth. The nice thing is since the reduction of the tooth is so small; you will not need a temporary ‘tooth’ while they are being made.
Sensitively to extreme food and beverage temperatures is to be expected after you have gone thru the preparation for the porcelain veneers yet this should go away after the veneers are set.
When you return to your dentist, the porcelain veneers will be set, with or without anesthetic. This will be the longer of the two visits. The laminates are set with a resin that is hardened by a special white light.
You need to take care of your new porcelain veneers just like you would your natural teeth. It is very important to brush and floss well to avoid any future problems.
After about a week, you will go back to the dentist to make sure everything is as it should be. The dentist will make any necessary adjustments at this point.
If porcelain veneers aren’t for you, then consider teeth bleaching. Teeth bleaching is a good option because it can be done at home or at the dentist office, which ever you prefer. Be sure to check with your dentist to make sure that teeth bleaching will work for you. If your teeth are grey or brownish, they may not whiten well, if at all.
You can start with over the counter treatments. They will have a lower concentration of hydrogen peroxide than use with the professional treatments. The best you can hope for using this method is one or two shades whiter in a couple of weeks. If you are looking at using whitening strips, keep in mind they only cover six teeth and they must be evenly placed. Paint on gels can be messy, but they give similar results and cover more teeth at once. These are good options if your teeth are stained primarily just due to coffee, wine or smoking.
You can also see your dentist and use a special mouth tray at home where you would put a solution into it and wear the tray for a couple hours a day or over night. The active ingredient in the gel is 10, 15 or 20 percent Carbamine Peroxide; this is gentler than Hydrogen Peroxide. The higher the concentration of peroxide, the faster the teeth bleaching will happen. However, your teeth may be more sensitive as well with this method.
