Types Of Acne Medicine

Topical retinoid are a derivative of vitamin A and are prescription acne medication used to combat mild to moderately severe acne cases. Retinoid help to unblock the pores and thus reducing the outbreak of acne. This acne medicine also allows further medication to treat the pores after unblocking them. Topical retinoid often come in cream, gel or liquid forms. Retinoid can sometimes cause skin irritation and increased sensitivity to the sun so be sure to apply in accordance to your doctor’s prescription.

For more severe cases of acne outbreaks, oral antibiotics could be prescribed. These antibiotics act to reduce the infection of the P. Acnes bacteria and thus reducing the inflammation. Since this type of acne medicine is an antibiotic, it is wise to follow the prescription strictly to avoid the risk of having the bacteria becoming antibiotic resistant.

Oral contraceptives can be used as a long-term acne treatment. What they do is suppress the sebaceous gland that produces oil for the skin. This will reduce the chances of getting clogged pores which causes acne. Be warned that there are potential health hazards in taking oral contraceptives such as blood clots, stroke and heart attack so be sure to follow doctor’s orders when taking them!
