Zelnorm Recall Update: Zelnorm has recently been recalled by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration due to its link to serious, life-threatening side effects. These side effects include heart attack, stroke, angina pectoris, heart attack, stroke, angina pectoris, Intestinal Ischemia, Colonic Ischemia and Ischemic Colitis. What is Zelnorm?

Tegaserod maleate, more commonly known as the prescription drug Zelnorm, is marketed by Novartis Pharmaceuticals. The United States Food and Drug Administration approved it in July of 2004. Zelnorm is intended for the short-term treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in women. IBS is a syndrome that affects the function of the large intestine and colon. The drug is mainly meant to relieve severe, chronic constipation that is a main symptom of IBS. Zelnorm has never been tested on men and therefore not prescribed to males.

The drug is not a cure for IBS, but only a treatment. It is believed that Zelnorm provides benefits for most patients that suffer from irritable bowel syndrome and constipation because it increases the movement of fecal matter through the intestinal system. The drug is effective in relieving constipation (hard stools or difficulty passing stools) as it increases serotonin within the intestines. The increase in serotonin in turn increases the movement of stool through the bowels. For many patients that have used the drug, they have experienced a reduction in pain, discomfort, bloating, and constipation.

How to Use Zelnorm Because Zelnorm is a prescription drug, it is important to take it only as directed by a licensed physician. Never take a drug if you are unsure or do not fully understand the instructions. Your doctor or pharmacist will always be happy to explain them to you. Always be sure to take Zelnorm with a full glass of water and on an empty stomach. Typically, the regimen requires that the drug be taken twice a day. It is important to understand that Zelnorm is not a cure for irritable bowel syndrome, but is only a treatment. If the regimen is halted, symptoms of IBS may return within two weeks. Always remember that Zelnorm does not reduce the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome in every person. It may relieve all, just some, or none of the pain, bloating, and constipation commonly associated with IBS. If, after about a month, there is no improvement, Zelnorm may not be the best treatment and should be stopped with the consultation of a physician.

Zelnorm Side Effects As with any prescription or over the counter medication, there are schmidtandclark.com/Zelnorm/” target=”_blank side effects associated with the use of Zelnorm. The most commonly experienced side effects include, but are not limited to, headaches, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and dizziness. More serious side effects include heart attack, stroke, angina pectoris, Intestinal Ischemia, Colonic Ischemia and Ischemic Colitis. Upon prescribing Zelnorm, the physician will review and explain the side effects to the patient.

Additionally, any patient that is prone to excessive diarrhea, bad kidney function, liver disease, bowel obstructions, gallbladder disease, or abdominal adhesions should not take Zelnorm as treatment for irritable bowel syndrome. The drug may exacerbate these preexisting conditions. Zelnorm is intended for short-term treatment of irritable bowel syndrome only and is not recommended for long-term use. Physicians suggest that the drug be used only for several weeks or months at a time. Most often, the effects of the drug wear off after extended use. *This article does not constitute medical advice and is for informational purposes only.
