#1 Hurdle to Weight Loss
August 22nd, 2009 by admin | Filed under Uncategorized. What is the most difficult aspect of losing weight? Is it giving up your favorite high-calorie food or drink? No, but close. Is it sticking to a new type of eating plan? Getting closer. Is it training yourself to live a healthy lifestyle? Getting hot. Is it making the changes to live healthy? BINGO! In short, CHANGE is the hardest thing about losing weight, or achieving any new goal for that matter.
Today you decide that you are going to go to night school and earn a degree in computer technology. Tomorrow you start…what to you do? Organize your schedule, rearrange the kids’ schedules; be sure the budget is going to support the extra expense; plan on study time; prepare for exams…and on and on. Oh yeah, and while you’re at it, be sure that you have a plan on what you’ll do with this new degree. Most people have an idea that’s why they take the plunge, but is it a clear enough idea?
Let’s look at the #1 one hurdle when it comes to losing weight and reaching our fitness goals. Change. How do we do it so that we can be successful?
First, you make the decision…obviously. But let’s be clear on that decision - let’s get a visual on what it is you will look like; what it is you will be doing; how will you be living. In other words with your goal has to come a vision. Let’s say your goal is to be 145 lbs. More importantly, create a vision of the person you are at 145 lbs - picture yourself exercising, eating healthy, having more energy, being more productive, getting up early, making a healthy breakfast…anything and everything that will provide a clearer picture of the life you will be living that you may not be living now (otherwise you’d be your goal weight, right?).
Second, how about following a plan that doesn’t completely change your life tomorrow. How about taking things one step at a time so that you can reach a small goal at a time and have a much higher chance of continue that climb without stumbling. Changing your mind is one thing, changing your life is another…that requires time. Taking on one change and mastering it will put you in position of confidence and empowerment that will allow you to tackle the next task. So your plan is just as important as your clear vision.
Third, be consistent. This is going to be much easier when you don’t have so many changes to implement. It’s hard to be consistent when tomorrow you’re going to start eating a pre-planned diet that is totally different than what you’ve been eating. One small change on the path to big changes are much easier to digest - don’t try to swallow the elephant whole (sorry, I had to throw that in there!).
Losing 50 lbs or more is not a goal that you are going to win tomorrow. But if you prepare your mind for winning that goal and clearer see you being that person and doing actions that will provide you with that level of fitness, then you can be motivated to start moving in that direction.
