Wheat intolerance is a common intolerance; about 15% of the population suffer from wheat intolerance or coeliac disease and it tends to affect those who are from European decent and women more than men.
What is coeliac disease?
Coeliac disease is the intolerance to gluten; gluten is the protein within wheat, rye, oats and barley. Now there tends to be confusion over wheat intolerance and coeliac disease. Some people say they are the same thing. Some people differ, but the truth is they have similar symptoms and you will need to exclude wheat from your diet to stop these symptoms. For argument sake, I am just going to concentrate on coeliac disease.
Is coeliac disease a wheat allergy?
What wheat intolerance or coeliac disease definitely is not, is a wheat allergy. A wheat allergy is very rare and it is an auto-immune response caused by the protein within wheat, the symptoms are sudden and include:
• Coughing
• Difficulty with breathing
• Vomiting
the symptoms of a wheat allergy can be life-threatening.
Coeliac disease (also known as gluten sensitive enteropathy) is intolerance to gluten which is present in:
• Barley
• Oats
• Rye
• Wheat
The gluten damages the mucous membrane lining within the bowel by stunting the Villi.
The symptoms of coeliac disease are:
• Diarrhoea
• Malabsorption of essential nutrients resulting in deficiency of iron, vitamin K and vitamin D
• Tiredness
• Weight loss
• Bloated Stomach
Another symptom which you may notice if you have coeliac disease is greasy stools which tend to be clay-coloured.
