Decreasing the amount of sodium in your can effectively lower blood pressure. Sodium is largely found on salt; thus cutting down on eating salty foods would help a lot in reducing sodium levels in your body.

Most American adults take in an average of 4 to 6 grams in a day. That is way above the recommended sodium intake, which is only 2.4 grams daily. When your blood pressure goes up, it is advisable to ask your physician how much sodium you should take in a day to reduce further risks.

Other Sources of Sodium

A teaspoonful of salt would already add 2.3 grams of sodium in your body. Based on the recommended sodium intake, that is supposed to be enough, but people take more sodium than they should. They get sodium from other foods such as canned and ready-to-eat packaged foods.

A Healthy Diet

Eating foods rich in potassium would help lower blood pressure. You can get potassium from fruits and vegetables such as banana, watermelon, oranges, and potatoes.

Also, include in you low-fat milk and other milk products such as low-sodium cheese. As much as possible, do not eat regular cheeses that are high in sodium.

When it comes to meat, avoid cured and processed meats. You have to cut down on eating hotdogs, bacon, sausages and the like. If you usually have them on your breakfast table, why not try a cup of oatmeal, two slices of whole-wheat toast, a banana and orange juice this time?
