Don’t Waste Your Money On Vitamin E
May 15th, 2011 by admin | Filed under Uncategorized. Before you spend your hard earned money on supplements, be sure you understand what you are buying. Vitamin E is offered for sale at every drug store, grocery store, and health store. It is found in virtually all multivitamins. The quality and ingredients vary greatly.
Vitamin E comes in two predominant forms: tocopherols and tocotrienols. Vitamin E supplements should include both. You should be able to identify the type(s) available from the information on the back of the bottle. If it is not specified - Do not buy it.
During normal metabolism, your body uses oxygen to produce energy. This process produces free radicals- dangerous molecules that can damage your cells, and lead to heart disease, cancer, and many other diseases. Vitamin E helps protect your body from the damaging effects of these free radicals. Most studies of Vitamin E have focused on the alpha tocopherol form. Recent studies have shown, however, that the gamma tocopherol form is equally and perhaps more important in the prevention of disease. While alpha tocopherol acts mainly as an anti-oxidant, the gamma form acts by reducing inflammation. These anti-inflammatory properties of gamma tocopherol are important in preventing heart disease and cancer.
Tocotrienols are another form of Vitamin E. This type of Vitamin E helps with cholesterol levels and helps to prevent plaque buildup in the arteries.
Many Vitamin E supplements contain only alpha tocopherol. This can be dangerous, as high dose alpha tocopherol supplementation can actually reduce levels of gamma tocopherol. This is why it is important to choose a high quality supplement with both alpha and gamma tocopherols and mixed tocotrienols.
Another issue is the type of alpha tocopherol. D-alpha tocopherol is natural Vitamin E. dl-alpha tocopherol is synthetic Vitamin E and is not recommended.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that acts as an Anti-oxidant. Vitamin E may help protect against:
• Heart Disease (coronary artery disease)
• Cancer
• Alzheimer’s Disease
• Blood clots
• Cataracts

• Vegetable Oils (palm, sunflower, canola, soybean, olive)
