Prevent Foot Problems When Walking

February 25th, 2012 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Americans are on the go. According to a NSGA Survey, 71
million American adults are exercise walkers, making
walking the top sport in the United States. Taking steps daily
to improve health will help with America’s epidemic.
Sixty five percent of Americans are overweight, which is
linked to diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and some types
of cancer. Walking an extra 2000 steps a day is equivalent to
walking a distance of 1 mile and to burning 100 calories.
Burning an extra 100 calories a day is equivalent to losing
about 10 pounds in a year.

The American Podiatric Medical Association teamed with
Prevention Magazine to name the “12 Best Walking Cities in
the U.S.” The cities were examined based on their crime
rate, air quality, mass transit, historic sites, museums,
parks and gyms. The top 12 cities were San Francisco, San
Diego, Honolulu, Washington, DC, San Antonio, El Paso, St.
Louis, Madison, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York and New
Jersey.

National campaigns, health practitioners and even major
corporations are encouraging Americans to walk more.
Unfortunately, many sedentary individuals who start walking
programs quickly develop foot problems. Almost sixty
million Americans have foot problems and many develop
them after beginning a new exercise routine. A foot injury
can take weeks, even months to heal and many will gain
more weight during this healing period. Preventing these
problems through education will keep Americans walking.

1. Buy a shoe made for walking. Make sure the shoe has
enough stability and support. If you can fold the shoe in half,
it is too flexible. Make sure the shoe has enough room at the
toes and is fitted well at the heel.

2. Start on flat surfaces. Do not start a walking program
walking on hills or stairs.

3. Start with a short distance. Stick with that distance for a
week. If you are pain free and injury free, increase the
distance the following week.

4. Start with an easy pace. Increase your pace gradually.

5. Choose soft surfaces. Walking on a track or a trail will
decrease the impact on your feet and legs. Cement can be
a particularly hard surface to walk on.

6. Limit your time on the treadmill. Treadmills can contribute
to the development of foot problems. Start with the treadmill
flat and at a slow pace. Slowly increase your pace each
week. Increase the incline after you have reached a
comfortable pace.

7. Stop if you feel foot or ankle pain. Don’t try to walk through
the pain.

8. Examine your feet. Look areas of rub or irritation the first
few weeks of your walking program and then again after
trying new shoes or socks. Moleskin can be placed on
areas of irritation to help decrease friction. Do not use
bandaids on these areas.

9. Consider wearing orthotics. Individuals with flat feet may
need inserts for their shoes. When buying inserts, look for
sport othotics, as opposed to cushioned insoles. A more
rigid insert will offer more support. Custom orthotics can be
made by a podiatrist if necessary.

10. Avoid cotton socks. Synthetic socks decrease friction,
prevent excess rubbing and don’t absorb moisture. Your
local running store or sports store should carry a variety of
new high-tech socks for walking.

Consult your podiatrist if you start to develop pain when
walking, or consider a visit before embarking on your new
walking program.

Dangers of Steroids

February 21st, 2012 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Dangers of taking Prednisone is really not a subject your doctor discusses with you. I know. I was on prednisone a few times and won’t take it ever again. I had taken the medicine by the instructions on the package, the only thing the doctor told to me was take this medicine. Well I sure am glad I read the instructions, which said you take the medicine the way they tell you and in the end you wean yourself off it. Otherwise you can develop problems. And problems is just what I ended up with. I had gone to my family doctor with my elbow swelled up and retaining fluid. Well he didn’t know what it was, but put me on prednisone and set up an appointment with a bone specialist. I went to the specialist and found out I had bursitis. He told me to stop taking the prednisone and to take the anabolic that he prescribed. Let me tell you, that is when the problems started. He didn’t tell me to wean myself off the prednisone, just to quit taking it. Within three days I ended up with frozen shoulders. That is very painful. I couldn’t lift my arms up past my waist. My husband had to comb my hair for me and help me get dressed. I ended up getting to loosen up the muscles. They were so stiff and painful, it took quite a few treatments to finally get to where I could use my arms again. Frozen shoulders could last 18 months or longer.

Then I got shots of cortisone in my back for my two herniated disk. The shots worked great but only for a month each time I got one. So much for those. Still not realizing that it was a form of steroid.

I guess I still didn’t learn a lesson. I ended up with a sinus infection and the doctor put me on prednisone again. This doctor loved to give prescriptions for that stuff. Well I took it and ended up with thin skin. Now all I have to do is bump my arms or even scratch and the blood comes to the surface. I end up with red marks or bruises for atleast a week. If I bump my arms to hard the skin actually breaks open.

Well the latest thing is my eyes. I had gone in for an eye exam. The doctor was a new one I had gone to see and didn’t know anything about me and I didn’t tell him about my other eye exams until he started questioning me after my exam. He made a remark that my eyes have really changed since my last prescription. Well they take your old glasses and check to see what prescription they are. My glasses are about 10 months old. I am on my third pair of glasses in a little over two years.

In talking to him, he said there is two things that could make my eyes change like that. Diabetes or cataract. I know I don’t have diabetes and the other doctor a couple years ago told me that I have the beginning of a cataract. In talking to the doctor, he said I am too young to have them. People develop them in their 60’s. In talking, he started asking about steroids. Well, it turns out that in the last two and a half years I have had the prednisone and the cordnisone quite a few times…..to many times and it affected my eyes.

The problem with medicines, the doctors want to prescribe them to you but won’t tell you the side affects. I usually read the pamphlet they give you with your medicines, and didn’t take the dangers of them medicine to heart and now the medical problems are starting. So if you take medicine please pay attention to the dangers and side affects. And be careful taking steroids.

Becoming A Vegetarian - Becoming A Vegetarian Isn’t As Difficult As You Might Think

February 17th, 2012 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Most people make the decision to become a vegetarian because of health and wellness reasons. But most Hindu and Buddhists are strict and others practice vegetarian eating habits because they are animal activists and abhor the treatment of animals during the slaughter process.

Becoming a vegetarian has gained widespread acceptance in the past 5 years as research is showing that eating a vegetarian will lower a persons risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

There is more than one way to become a vegetarian. You should know yourself enough to know if going cold turkey or moving into a vegetarian lifestyle slowly will be more successful. Becoming a vegetarian slowly means beginning by excluding meat and fish. Some people find that excluding one type of meat a month makes the transition easier.

Recent research has shown that live longer and healthier lives. The American Dietetic Association (ADA) on their website states that vegetarian diets offer a number of nutritional benefits, including lower levels of saturated fat, and animal protein as well as higher levels of carbohydrates, fiber, magnesium, potassium, folate and antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E.

Becoming a vegetarian also gives you an easier time maintaining an appropriate weight. Some criticisms include the difficulty that some people have getting all of their essential nutrients. However, eating a normal variety of whole grains, beans, nuts, and vegetables will OFTEN give adequate amounts of the essential nutrients.

After becoming a vegetarian many people report “feeling better” and having more energy with the change. Your daily dietary intake should include vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and whole grains.

Becoming a vegetarian is a choice. Everyday you chose your , exercise, stress levels and work patterns. Sometimes we think they are chosen for us but it’s just not the case. We choose. Becoming a vegetarian is a continuum effect. It’s never that you are or you aren’t but rather how much of a vegetarian are you?
