Everyone knows that you must properly earth electrical appliances in order to prevent a potentially lethal build-up of energy, but recent cutting –edge research is showing that human beings also need to be “earthed” for exactly the same reason! Here’s why.
Remember what it’s like to walk barefoot on the grass? To lie with your bare skin against the sand? To paddle through the surf without shoes or socks? Remember how good it feels? And have you ever wondered why it feels so good? Well, probably not, if you’re like me. It just feels good, doesn’t it? Why analyse it? Just enjoy it whist you can.
Luckily for us, however, experts over at The California Institute of Science have taken the trouble to investigate the feel-good factor of barefootin’, and after years of research they’ve come to an astonishing conclusion—that the pleasure we experience from being barefoot on the earth, though therapeutic, is a mere hint of the true benefits to be gained. Because they have proved that contact with the earth has real, physical, measurable long-term health benefits that are necessary to our well-being. Or to put it the other way round, denying ourselves contact with earth energy leads to a long term and potentially serious diminution of our health.
In simple terms it works like this. The earth’s surface is charged with an enormous reservoir of free electrons. The earth is electric. And so are we. Every process in our bodies is regulated by finely tuned electrical systems. However, just like, say, a TV set, we get a build up of static in our bodies (called EMF’s –electric and magnetic fields) which if not discharged causes an accumulation of “free radicals”, the so-called “molecules of inflammation” and a major cause of illness.
In the natural course of things, the static build-up is discharged by simple skin contact with the earth, which in return sends billions of free electrons (antioxidants) back into the body. This is one of the miracles of nature, a perfectly designed two-way process which maintains our normal chemical reactions, keeps us healthy and has worked flawlessly for most of human history.
Unfortunately, however, over the last 60 years or so most of us in the developed world have increasingly insulated ourselves from the earth in our homes and workplaces, and even outside by wearing synthetically –soled shoes. Disconnected from the earth we are no longer able to discharge our static energy, leading to a build-up of EMF’s and an electrical imbalance which helps grow and sustain free radicals. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, asthma, arthritis gastrointestinal disorders and hypertension are all linked to stress, inflammation and free radicals, and it’s no coincidence that each of these diseases has sky-rocketed over the last 50-60 years – the same length of time that we’ve become insulated from the earth.
Fortunately, the remedy is as easy as taking off your shoes, socks or stockings and walking or standing barefoot on the earth. This allows a natural flow of electrons to and from our bodies and connects us to the vital earth rhythms that set many of our biological clocks. Unfortunately, however, modern life isn’t like that .We live in an artificial environment and we cannot spend enough time standing barefoot on the earth to restore and maintain the natural quantity of antioxidants (free electrons) that we need to combat inflammation and aging.
Which is why some very clever people have developed the “earthing pad”, a specially designed mattress pad which is placed over the bottom third of the mattress and which is connected via cable to the ground to provide a direct connection to the earth. “Sleeping Earthed”, as it is called, enables you to discharge the static and free radicals and restores the natural two-way flow of electrons between the earth and the body whilst you sleep. For most people this provides up to eight hours a day of the direct connection with the earth that is so necessary for our health and well-being.
