How to Calm the Raging Inferno of Acid Reflux

May 26th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

More than 60 million people suffer with acid reflux disease every week of their life. Acid reflux is a very unpleasant and annoying condition. It is not considered to be a severe condition such as acid reflux, unless it occurs over twice a week over a time span of several months.

If acid reflux disease goes untreated for a prolonged period of time, it can cause permanent damage to the esophagus.

Acid reflux disease is caused by acid from the stomach washing back up into the esophagus repeatedly. This happens when the lower esophageal sphincter becomes weak and relaxed.

The main cause of the relaxed esophageal sphincter muscle is high fat foods which have been shown in studies to temporarily weaken the esophageal sphincter muscle.

The most common symptoms of acid reflux disease are a burning in the chest, a sour acidic taste in your mouth, sore throat, and bad breath. Usually laying down right after eating will make symptoms worsen.

Many people suffering from acid reflux have found relief in positioning their bed in an upright position. They usually do this by putting 4 to 6 inch blocks under the 2 bedposts at the head of the bed.

The answer to most people who suffer with acid reflux disease is to reach for an antacid. These are o.k. for short term use, but reducing the acid in the stomach is not the answer.

In recent research, results indicated that reducing the acid in the stomach can cause several other diseases. So, what can you do? When you have acid reflux you absolutely have to have relief- and the quicker the better.

The first thing to do is start eating foods that are high in fiber. Then make sure that you eat smaller meals so you won’t overfill the stomach, causing sloshing of the fluids in the stomach up into the esophagus.

Eat more complex carbohydrate foods and lay off of the fried fatty foods. Last of all, but not least it will help you tremendously if you can start an exercising program.

The most common foods that are known for causing acid reflux are fried foods, caffeine, and alcohol. Smoking also causes the esophageal muscle to relax causing a problem for acid reflux sufferers. There are even some medications that can cause problems for some patients with acid reflux disease.

Be sure to consult with your physician concerning interactions of medications he has prescribed. A physician administering an acid reflux treatment usually prescribes various drugs as a first line of defense.

The stomach is designed to be very acidic with a pH of 3.0 or less. When your stomach has the proper pH, it digests your food so that it is broken down into vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are absorbed.

When the acid is reduced greatly in the stomach by antacids, it leaves too little acid for the functions in which it was designed for. Vitamins and minerals are severely depleted in cases where the patient continues over long periods of time to consume antacids.

COPD Support Groups

May 15th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Caused mainly by , COPD has no cure once a patient is affected. Although quitting may help, COPD cannot be cured completely.

A patient coming to terms with the fact that COPD is a lifetime illness needs care, understand and support. Although family and friends are a great support, they may be lacking information about combating this deadly disease. In such cases, COPD support groups are of great help to the patient and his family.

COPD support groups provide a reliable platform for the patient to air his concerns about the disease and get adequate medical and emotional support. Most of the support groups provide vital information to the members, address their medical and emotional concerns, share valuable information about fighting COPD and assist the members in quitting. Also, by joining a COPD support group, a patient understands that he is not the only one suffering from this disease, and there are others like him coping with COPD. More often than not, it gives more strength to the patient to fight the disease.

When a patient is diagnosed with COPD, coping with the disease is as important to him as taking the medicines. If the patient is not handling the emotional trauma well, it may cause irritability, mistrust, frustration, lack of energy, etc, and make the fight against the disease all the more difficult. A support group readily understands the patient’s problem and works towards controlling the disease.

There are numerous COPD support groups. Some provide information on medicines available to the patients, and others provide information on the and correct eating habits. There are also groups to help their members quit and provide moral and emotional support. A simple search on the Internet will provide a list of such organizations available in your neighborhood.

After all, help is never too far away!

How To Make Any Diet Easy

March 26th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

In life we often set ourselves tasks. Many tasks we deal with quickly and simply. We have no real problem going to the shops, meeting friends for a drink, doing the laundry, or making the bed. Other tasks can prove impossible and among these we might list quitting , stopping drinking and, of course, dieting.

Why is this? The answer is really simple – it comes down to will power – that is all that stands between you and success, whatever you are on.

So how about giving your will power a helping hand?

The problem is buried inside our brains and it may help to understand this when we consider:

1. That when we go out with our friends we are keen and eager to go. It is something we have done before and there are no conflicts within us.

2. That when we do the laundry it may not be our favourite task but it is a habit we have developed and it does not take too long. Sometimes we may put it off but it gets done eventually, maybe when we have no clothes left to wear.

3. But when we try to we run slap bang into our established habits – habits that we have developed over years and which we are, deep down, very attached to. Plus this is no short lived task – we may have to do it for days.

Take my friend Catherine. She just loves to eat, she really enjoys it. But she is rather over-weight. She is lovely with it, very good company, and extremely generous.

Over the years she has tried every , every new fad, and she has done fine for a few days, even a few weeks sometimes, but then she stops the “” and goes back to her normal eating habits.

Result: within weeks she is back where she started from.

Catherine is running straight into her subconscious, and her will power is not strong enough to fight it. All her life she has behaved in a certain way, eaten when she wanted, and this has built up a pattern her subconscious is going to defend – this is why dieting is so tough.

Sure, we can fight the subconscious for a while with our will power. But over time it always wins. It just takes one slip and we are back where we started from.

But there is a better way, why not retrain your subconscious so that it works with you and not against it – that makes sense doesn’t it. That way your subconscious is helping your will power and your chances of sticking to the have just increased enormously.

How do you do this? It is called hypnotherapy and it is very easy, very simple, and it has long term benefits. To go this route you can find a local practitioner or buy an audio program. You might find it makes all the difference in the world!
